In this blog post, you will find helpful tips on caring for and cleaning your precious jewellery. Whether your jewellery has lost its shine or appears dull, I will provide easy-to-follow methods for cleaning it at home. I will also advise when to leave it to the experts!
As a jewellery owner, it can be disheartening to see your beloved pieces become dirty and worn out over time, especially if they hold sentimental value. Before attempting to clean them, it's essential to understand the materials and gemstones they are made of. Different metals and gemstones require specific care instructions.

While diamonds and sapphires can be safely cleaned at home, delicate gemstones like opals, pearls, and emeralds should be taken to a professional who will handle them with the necessary care.
Tip #1 - Cleaning Gemstones
If you've been wearing your favourite gemstone jewellery for a while and it's not as shiny as it used to be, don't worry! This can happen due to a buildup of soap, lotion, sweat and dead skin cells behind the settings. To bring back its sparkle, you can soak your jewellery in a mix of mild dishwashing liquid and warm water for 10-20 minutes. After that, give it a gentle brush with a soft toothbrush or jewellery cleaning brush, focusing on the back and underside of your pieces. Finally, rinse your jewellery under warm water (remember to cover the plug hole) and pat it dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. With these easy steps, your gemstones will look as good as new again!

Tip #2 - Bring the sparkle back to silver
Keeping silver shiny and clean can be challenging, as it tarnishes quickly. Silvo and a soft polishing cloth can help restore its lustre if it's looking dull. However, there are a few alternative methods to consider for more stubborn tarnish buildup. It's important to note that the second method should only be used on jewellery without gemstones since hot water can cause them to crack.
Method 1: Create a mixture of baking soda and water and gently rub it onto the surface using a soft cloth or gentle toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth.
Method 2: To effectively clean your silver jewellery that doesn't have gemstones or pearls, start by lining a bowl with aluminium foil. Place your jewellery in the centre and add one teaspoon of dishwashing detergent, one tablespoon of salt, and one tablespoon of baking soda. Pour approximately 250ml of hot water over the mixture and watch as the tarnish lifts off the surface. Make sure the jewellery stays in contact with the aluminium foil. After a few minutes, remove the jewellery, rinse it off, and gently pat dry. This is the simplest and safest way to clean your silver pieces thoroughly.

Tip #3 - When to see the professionals
Having your jewellery professionally cleaned every 12 to 24 months is always a great idea. It will keep your pieces stunning and ensure the claws and settings are tip-top, preventing gemstones from falling out. Did you know that white gold is plated in a thin layer of rhodium, which can wear off and cause the gold to lose its shine over time? But no worries, professional rhodium plating can restore it to its former glory.

Tip #4 - Care and Storage
When we're caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to forget about the little things that keep our jewellery in top shape. That's why I've put together some helpful tips to make it easier for you to maintain the quality of your jewellery.
Remove Jewellery Before Activities: Giving your jewellery a little break is necessary! Wearing them constantly can expose them to chemicals, soaps, sweat, and other factors that dull their sparkle. To keep them looking fabulous, take them off before swimming, showering, exercising, applying lotion, or doing any household chores. It's easy to protect your jewellery and keep it looking its best. And if you're headed to the gym, leaving your jewellery at home is best. Heavy weight can bend rings out of shape, not to mention the sweat that can build up.

Storage: We all treasure Jewellery dearly, but it can be easily damaged if not stored properly. That's why it's essential to keep your pieces safe and organised. Store each piece separately using soft pouches, jewellery boxes with individual compartments, or lined jewellery rolls. Also, keep your jewellery away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures, which can damage certain gemstones and cause others to fade in colour. And if you have some precious pieces, keeping them in a locked jewellery box or safe for added security is always a good idea.

If you want to keep your beautiful jewellery shining and looking as stunning as the day you got it, it's essential to take good care of it. Follow the care instructions for each piece and avoid any activities that could cause damage. Also, don't forget to give your jewellery a good cleaning every once in a while. These simple steps will help ensure your precious pieces stay in great shape for generations! And if you ever need help restoring their sparkle, just let me know, and I'll gladly assist.
